Why Speech Pathology after ABI?
Understanding what ‘speech pathology’ is, can be confusing.
We believe that ‘Communication Therapy’ is a better way to describe what we do at Melbourne ABI Speech Pathology.
As well as speaking and listening, there are lots of ways we communicate, such as waving to say hello, sending text messages on our phone or even writing an essay to express our opinion on a controversial issue.
There are also many factors that are involved in communication, such as being able to find the right words, interpret someone’s facial expression to understand how they are feeling, through to using our thinking skills to plan an appropriate response.
We support our clients to better understand their own communication and enhance their abilities in any area that relates to the complex act of communicating.
This could include:
Learning how to plan and write an email
Using strategies to speak more clearly
Increasing confidence in social situations
Developing ways to understand and remember what you have read
Learning how to enhance communication if speech is difficult
Preparing for a return to work or study
Learning how to regulate and communicate your feelings
Understanding how to tell someone about your day
Knowing how to make and sustain friendships
Communication encompasses a very broad array of skills, and every person we work with is unique, with their own individual circumstances and values, so the support we provide looks different for every client we meet.
